Standard of Beauty

I should start out by saying that I do love my grandparents. They helped shape me into who I am today . . . good and bad.
They used to hound me about my weight when I was just a child. You guys know I haven’t been skinny since I was eight years old or so. Once after listening to my Grandmother critique my weight when I was about 12, I asked her why she would do that to me. She said, “I want you to be pretty and have boyfriends one day.” It is 16 years later and I have never forgotten it obviously, and I have to say it has warped me. When I was a teenager, I used to crash diet to the point that I passed out cold at a drugstore once when I was 15. That’s something a lot of people don’t know about me.

To this day I am envious of “those girls”. You know who I’m referring to . . . size two, gorgeous, the “whole package”. I just want to cram Crisco down their throat while they’re sleeping.

You’re probably wondering why I’m ranting about this. I was “stumbling” and “stumbled upon” a site where someone had posted photos of Zigfield Follies girls from the early 1900’s. They’re beautiful, in my eyes . . . and not at all skeletal like what is considered attractive these days. . .

If these women posed for a magazine today, they would be called fat.

I'm by no means a Britney fan or supporter, you guys know better than that. . .but in this disastrous performance, she was called fat.

I don't know about you guys, but if I had that body, I would never wear clothes. No wonder young girls are cramming their fingers down their throats.

I just looked up medieval beauty standards, and this is what came up. . .

*Sigh* I was totally born in the wrong era...

  1. I'm with you, Amy. This Crisco Intervention sounds like a plan to me! It's like an international conspiracy to make women feel inadequate. As if we don't have enough reasons to struggle with that already, right?

Ahem. You, young lady, are gorgeous, and I have always thought so. Also, cooking is the only talent you have to speak of? I know this is from another post, but I disagree. You sing like an angel. I happen to remember. ^_^

  2. Hi! I found you through the lovely Heather Rose. I'm so with you on this! My grandmother rides me about my weight - if I gain a bit, I'm fat; when I loose weight, she thinks I have an eating disorder and starts cramming food down my throat. I have such a messed up body image its not even funny (and I'm little too - at least that's what my clothing sizes tell me).

The thing I have to keep reminding myself is that its not what size you are but how you carry yourself that makes you beautiful. Projection is everything. And surrounding yourself with people who think you're beautiful no matter what, also helps.

  3. Awww. . you guys are great! Nice to meet you Ari. . .I just left a long rambling comment on your blog, lol!

Heather, you are too sweet to me!!! However, the world outside of DAR and Snead thought differently. We should get together sometime!

  4. Yes, we should. I say you, Ari and I meet for dinner one night. We shall discuss how the world would benefit from us running things. ^_^

  5. I totally agree. My grandparents and parents used to do the same shit to me. I'm scarred for life over it. SO many eating disorders have come and gone, and now I've undergone Lap Band surgery. It's sick what our world has come to, and I'm a little sick with myself that I went for surgery to try to lose weight, but I'm just tired of being fat, *sigh*

  6. I, too, was born in the wrong era, but only because I say "capital" and love Gilbert & Sullivan.

  7. you are very right. actually, in previous times being thicker was what was strived for because it was a sign of wealth [they were able to feed themselves properly]. and i think that brittany spears looks very fit in that picture, not she isn't a skeleton but she is far from fat. i will be honest, i think that skeletal girls are gorgeous.... but that doesn't mean that the people in these pictures are fat, they just aren't emaciated.

  8. Ya know, as warped as my body image is, I would rather look like I am today, than have the skeletal super skinny body of a runway model. I like my hips and boobs, thanks. ;)
